Listen Up! 5 Podcasts for Pharmacists

Podcasts for Pharmacists

I have to admit I’m a little late to the bandwagon with podcasts (can I admit that I only started listening to them about 6 months ago?!) but I’ve found some awesome podcasts for pharmacists that I want to share with you.

Podcasts are a great way to learn and boost your CPD credits. I particularly love that they are on a new topic each week and often on topics that I might never have thought to sit down and research but I always find the content interesting and informative.

I also love that I can listen to them at any time and whilst I’m doing other things. I listen to them in the car , on my commute to way to work and have even been known to listen to them whilst doing the housework.

One small tip I picked up: listen to them at 1.5x speed. It’s just slow enough that you can understand, but makes the podcast that little bit faster.

Purple Pen Podcast

Hosted by clinical Pharmacists Jane Booth and Dan Guidone this fortnightly podcast discusses a variety of topics, and interviews a new guest each show. The content is aimed at clinical Pharmacists but has a wide reach and would be interesting for Pharmacists across the industry.

Australian Prescriber Podcast

Brand new on the block (started July 2017) this podcast produced by NPS MedicineWise interviews the authors of articles recently published in Australian Prescriber, delving deeper into the topic. New content is released every two weeks.

Hear This

Produced by the Australian College of Pharmacy for the Australian Journal of Pharmacy (AJP) this podcast features experts discussing relevant topics for Australian Community Pharmacists. This is the only podcast I’ve come across which is accredited for CPD credits and you can convert your Group 1 credits into Group 2 credits by answering assessment questions via myCPD (Pharmacy Guild), PSA online learning, ACP online learning and NZ PDA. A new podcast is released every few months.

  • Based in: Australia
  • Average run time: 1 hour
  • Accredited for CPD credits: Yes – listening to the podcast will get you Group 1 credits and answering assessment questions will convert that to Group 2 credits.
  • Cost: free
  • Available from: AJP

Transpharmation – redefining pharmacy through smart technology

This one goes out to all the pharmacy owners and managers. Robert Sztar, an Australian pharmacist and pharmacy owner, looks at how pharmacists can embrace technology to build their businesses by bringing them into the 21st century. Unfortunately it looks like Robert isn’t releasing new episodes at the moment but there are 101 episodes available to get you thinking.

Medscape Pharmacists Podcast

These short, sharp podcasts are great little bites of information. Covering a range of topics from opioid abuse to insulin therapy, this podcast has something for everyone. Medscape also produce many other speciality podcasts.

  • Based in: USA
  • Average run time: 10 mins
  • Accredited for CPD credits: No
  • Cost: free
  • Available from: iTunes

Whilst most of these podcasts aren’t accredited for CPD you can still count them towards your CPD record – you can record Group 1 CPD credits as you would for reading a journal article. But remember you can only count a maximum of 20 Group 1 credits. In need of some Group 2 or 3 credits? Check out our CPD database.

Update your CPD learning plan regularly so that you don’t forget what you’ve listened to. If I’m not in a position to do it immediately I email a link to the podcast to myself so I can update it later.

So there you have it – some interesting podcasts for Pharmacists to help put some of your commute time to better use rather than mindlessly scrolling social media. (Unless it’s scrolling The Pharmacist Collective Facebook page – we think that’s ok.)
